Best Things to Do in Ahmedabad | Calico Museum

Ahmedabad

Set on the banks of the Sabarmati River, Ahmedabad, gracefully combines old world wonders with new world metropolis. Founded in the 15th century by Ahmad Shah I, the then king of Gujarat, the city initially served as the capital of the Gujarat Sultanate before evolving in the center of India’s textile industry, first under the Mughals and then under the British East India Company. In 1915, Gandhi built his first ashram in Ahmedabad, which would mark the beginning of the non-violent civil disobedience movement in India.

Today, the city is lined with colonial buildings and the Sabarmati Ashram, now a national monument, sits peacefully on River Narmada’s west bank. An impressive array of Jain and Hindu temples are complemented by Islamic mosques and architecture, including exquisite stepwells. The star attraction, however, is the Calico Museum of Textile, which houses some of the world’s finest collections of antique and modern Indian textiles.
